Oulanka Research Station

Oulanka Research Station is situated in the river valley of Oulanka within the Oulanka National Park, 25 km south of the Arctic Circle in northern Finland. The centre is part of the regional infrastructure unit of the University of Oulu. Established in 1966 to promote research and teaching in biology and geosciences, the station also functions as a multidisciplinary unit responsible for coordinating the university’s activities in northeastern Finland. Its modern research and educational facilities provide an inspiring environment not only for researchers and teachers, but also for organisers of courses, seminars and conferences.

The measurements at this boreal site are being analysed to understand the hydrological partitioning of seasonal snow. The aim is to partition the snowpack mass loss by sublimation and melting, by coupling eddy covariance and stable water vapour isotopes and integrating these measurements with comprehensive meteorological data and periodic snowpack isotope profiles. The novelty of the research lies in the integration of in-situ measurements of stable water isotopes within and above the boreal seasonal snowpack, using a laser-infrared spectrometer deployed in situ.

The stable water isotopes will also be used in tracer-aided hydrological modelling to estimate boreal hydrological partitioning at the catchment and forest plot scale. The research modelling work is supported by long-term monitoring programs for hydrology, meteorology and ecology biogeochemistry at the research station.

Research in CryoSCOPE contributes to and benefits from the EcoClimate program, Digital Water flagship program, and CRYO-RI research infrastructure project.
